Why I studied Counselling

Today, I want to share with you why I studied Counselling. It all started when I was 19 and tragically lost a childhood friend to suicide. We were told that he had been struggling with depression, and witnessing his pain and eventual decision shook me to the core.

In the aftermath, I felt an overwhelming sense of helplessness. My friends and I were all feeling down, but I didn't know how to offer support or help them cope with their emotions. I realised that I lacked the understanding and tools to be a source of comfort and guidance during such difficult times.

That experience served as a turning point in my life. I made a conscious decision to learn about counselling and to delve deeper into the workings of our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. My journey began by enrolling in a counselling diploma program, but I quickly realized that it wasn't enough to fulfill my desire to truly help others. So, I made the commitment to pursue a bachelor's degree in counselling.

After completing my studies, I took a break from being a teacher and ventured into the role of a School Counsellor. It was during this time that I came to a profound realisation. Learning counselling should not solely be for my own growth and development, but rather, it should serve a higher purpose—to equip myself with the necessary skills and knowledge to be of service to others.

To deepen my understanding of the helping relationship and human psychology, I decided to pursue a Master of Counselling. This thirst for knowledge arose from a sincere eagerness to comprehend how we think, feel, and behave, and how these aspects intertwine to shape our lives.

My ultimate goal has always been to make a positive impact on the lives of people around me. The loss of my dear childhood friend was one life too many, and it ignited a burning passion within me to be there for others who may be facing their own battles. I wanted to be armed with the tools to support and guide them through their darkest moments.

Today, as a life coach, I feel humbled and grateful for the journey that led me here. Every step I took was driven by the desire to be a beacon of hope for those in need, to be a compassionate listener, and to assist others in leading better lives.

If you or anyone you know is struggling, please remember that you don't have to face it alone. Reach out to those around you, seek support, and remember that there is strength in vulnerability. Together, we can overcome life's challenges.

May we all find the courage to embrace our struggles, the wisdom to seek help when needed, and the compassion to support each other on this journey called life.
